Struggling with addiction? You’re not alone.
Across the aviation community—professional and general aviation alike—many pilots have quietly faced addiction to alcohol or other substances. Some are early in recovery, others have years of sobriety, and all understand the unique pressures of aviation as well as the fear that can come with asking for help. Recovery is possible, and choosing it does not mean sacrificing your career.
If you’re unsure where to begin, start by connecting with people who understand both aviation and recovery. Confidential, peer‑led meetings are available specifically for pilots and aviation professionals. Structured programs such as HIMS are also designed to support pilots in addressing substance use while preserving aviation safety and a pathway to the flight deck.
Taking the first step isn’t defeat—it’s a decision to move forward.
Rainbow Birds – an LGBTQ+ Aviation Recovery Meeting
Rainbow Birds is a weekly online recovery meeting created for LGBTQ+ members of the aviation community. Founded by NGPA members and recognized as an official “Nest” of Birds of a Feather International, this meeting follows the principles and traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous and welcomes anyone with a desire to stop drinking or using.
This meeting was intentionally designed to provide LGBTQ+ pilots and aviation professionals a place to authentically share experience, strength, and hope—without feeling the need to modify their identity. While the focus remains on the LGBTQ+ aviation community, all are welcome, with the expectation that all who attend will contribute to a respectful and affirming space.
If you’re seeking support, connection, or simply a place to listen, Rainbow Birds offers a safe, understanding community.
Visit rainbowbirds.org for more information, and join the conversation on Zoom — Thursdays at 5 p.m. Pacific / 6 p.m. Mountain / 7 p.m. Central / 8 p.m. Eastern.
