NGPA Joins Aviation Mental Health Alliance

The NGPA has joined the Aviation Mental Health Alliance (AMHA) as a Supporting Member, furthering its advocacy for policy that reflects modern clinical standards and supports the long-term health of the aviation workforce. The decision builds NGPA’s established commitment to safety, equity, and inclusion, while adding its voice to a growing industry-wide effort focused on improving mental health within aviation.

Despite advances in mental health care, FAA policies governing disclosure and medical certification have remained largely unchanged. Many pilots and aircrew continue to face complex, inconsistent, and disconnected processes that are not aligned with current medical practices. These conditions often discourage individuals from seeking treatment early, reinforcing stigma and creating uncertainty around career security. For LGBTQ+ aviation professionals, concerns related to confidentiality, bias, and access to affirming care can further complicate an already challenging system.

The Aviation Mental Health Alliance was established to address these longstanding issues through collaboration and evidence-based reform. The coalition brings together a broad range of stakeholders, including airlines, labor organizations, safety groups, medical experts, and advocacy organizations like NGPA, with the shared goal of modernizing mental health policy while preserving aviation safety. AMHA’s work includes supporting the bipartisan Mental Health in Aviation Act, improving mental-health disclosure and certification pathways, updating medication policies, expanding training for aviation medical examiners, increasing federal investment in research, and strengthening confidential reporting and early-intervention options.

NGPA’s participation as a Supporting Member reflects its belief that sustainable reform requires coordination across the industry. Through AMHA, NGPA will remain informed on federal policy developments, contribute to coalition advocacy initiatives, and take part in coordinated engagement with lawmakers and regulators when appropriate. This involvement helps ensure that the experiences and concerns of LGBTQ+ aviation professionals are included in national conversations about mental-health policy and certification reform.

Mental health has become an increasingly central focus of NGPA’s advocacy as members continue to navigate the realities of aviation careers, including irregular schedules, extended time away from home, financial pressures, and the responsibility that comes with safety-critical work. Efforts that reduce fear-driven non-disclosure and encourage early treatment not only support individuals but also strengthen the safety culture of the industry as a whole. By joining the Aviation Mental Health Alliance, NGPA affirms a core belief that has guided its advocacy for decades: aviation is safer, more resilient, and more sustainable when professionals are supported and able to prioritize their well-being without stigma. NGPA remains committed to advancing policies that uphold both safety and equity as this work moves forward.
