Reflecting on a Decade of NGPA Membership
It’s been a big year for Dustyn Shelby — in addition to earning his Aeronautical Science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, he is celebrating 10 years as an NGPA member. From an early age, his pilot parents encouraged him to pursue his passions and find a community where he could gain leadership experience and connect with people who shared his aspirations.

How did you discover NGPA?
Through conversations with my parents and in the aviation community, I saw how active NGPA was in supporting and connecting LGBTQ+ aviation professionals. What stood out to me was the sense of mentorship and encouragement the organization provides to pilots at every stage of their careers.
I decided to join because I wanted to be part of a network that promotes both professionalism and inclusivity in aviation.
How has your experience in NGPA compared to your expectations?
What I thought would primarily be a networking group turned into a much deeper sense of community, mentorship and genuine support within aviation.
I have connected with people at all stages of their careers who have been willing to share advice, opportunities and real-world insights. It has played a bigger role in my development as a pilot than I ever anticipated.
What has kept you in this organization for 10 years?
I have built meaningful friendships and professional connections with people who genuinely want to support and encourage one another’s success.
NGPA has continued to evolve, creating opportunities for pilots and students at every level, which has kept me engaged and inspired.
